In this multiplayer online battle arena video game, two teams of five players each go up against each other with the target of destroying the ‘Ancient’ in the opposing team’s area while protecting their own. Standard real-time strategy controls are used to control the game which is played on a 3-D map. Each of the ten players on both the teams controls one out of the 117 available characters that are called heroes, with each hero having its own set of unique abilities. The heroes are selected during the pre-game drafting phase, hence allowing the members of each team to confer about hero match-ups and strategy with their teammates because it is not possible to switch these heroes mid-game. Once a player has selected a hero, it gets removed from the drafting pool to ensure that no one else can select the same hero.
All the heroes come with the same damage-dealing attack capabilities. Each hero comes with four unique abilities for their primary method of fighting. To start, the heroes begin with only one ability but as the players, level goes up a level, the power of the hero increases as it gains access to one more ability at each level of the game. The most powerful ability of a hero is called ‘ultimate’ which is unlocked only after level 6 of the game. To avoid the use of the abilities without consequence, the game has a magic system in place. Once an ability is activated, it takes away some of the ‘mana points’ from the hero that do regenerate gradually over time. Once an ability is used, it enters into a cooldown phase which prevents the ability from being reused before the counter goes down to zero again. If a hero runs out of health points and dies, they are removed from active play until a respawn timer counts down to zero, where they are then respawned in their base.
