The game gets two teams called the Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists to go up against each other. Each team is assigned the task of eliminating as many members of the opposing team as possible as they go along achieving different targets set for them. The Terrorists are usually tasked with holding people hostage and preventing all the efforts of rescuing them or planting a bomb, while the Counter-Terrorists team is alternatively given the tasks of rescuing the hostages or either defusing the bomb after it has been planted or preventing the bomb from being planted. There are nine game modes (Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, Arms Race, Demolition, Wingman, Flying Scoutsman, Danger Zone, and Weapons Course) for CS:GO, and each one of them has specific distinct features that are unique to that mode. The CS:GO also supports matchmaking which lets the players play on dedicated Valve servers while at the same time allows members from the gaming community to be able to host their servers featuring their custom maps and tailored game modes. It also features a battle royal gameplay called the ‘Danger Zone’ which was launched in 2018.

After its launch, the game has become popular with players with an estimated 11 million players each month. Global Offensive remains an objective-based, multiplayer first-person shooter game, same as the previous games in the Counter-Strike series. It is based on two opposing teams that compete with each other to achieve objectives set for them. One team is called the Terrorists while the other team is called the Counter-Terrorists. At the end of each game round, the players get rewarded for good performance during the round in the form of in-game currency which they can spend on buying utility or weapons for the next rounds. With cash bonuses for killing enemies as part of the objective, winning rounds fetch more in-game currency than the losing rounds. There is also a penalty for actions that show a lack of coordination such as killing your teammate.

The weapons that can be purchased are categorized into five sections, out of which four are for guns and one is dedicated to utilities. CS:GO comes in nine different game modes which include the Arms Race, Casual, Wingman, Competitive, Flying Scoutsman, Deathmatch, Danger Zone, Demolition, and Weapons Course.

Players can make in-game purchases for different equipment, weapons, and ammunition using the money that is acquired around the map inside the buildings when certain objectives are met like rescuing hostages or defusing bombs. When a player makes a purchase, it is delivered to them through a drone that approaches their location on the map and drops it near them. There is also an offline gameplay mode called the Weapons Course which is there to help practice the game where new players can learn how to use grenades and guns and also how to plant or defuse a bomb. While the rest of the eight gameplay modes are online.
